About Us

Trombones Plus is an easy listening jazz ensemble featuring five trombones, plus piano, bass, and drums. The group performs a wide variety of popular, patriotic and jazz standards. From Gershwin to Jobim to Ellington, all arrangements feature that warm, vibrant, mellow, smooth and soulful Trombone sound.

Trombones Plus was formed in the mid-70s by a group of former OSU Marching Band members. The current group includes one of the founding members, Joe Riedel, as well as three additional former OSU band members, Bob Grossman, Wayne Rickert, and John Amerman.

Trombones Plus has performed more than 400 concerts and special events in and around Central Ohio over the past thirty years. While the leaders and the personnel have changed, the group continues to entertain audiences with the jazz / big band sound. With a repertoire of popular songs that appeals to all ages, always presented with good humor, Trombones Plus has become a crowd favorite. Concert presenters have put Trombones Plus on their “must have back” list year after year.

With the unique instrumentation - five trombones, piano, bass, and drums - all music has to be arranged specifically for the group. Local arrangers include Ken McCoy, one of the arrangers for the OSU marching band; former Columbus trombone great, Gary Carney; and the late Dave Wheeler. The book also includes arrangements from similar groups across the country, including Slide FX in California and Charlie Dana in Georgia.

All of the members of Trombones Plus reside in or near Columbus, Ohio and come from a wide variety of backgrounds from professional musician, to university professor, to Database Administrator.

If you are looking for a group with a unique sound that presents a thoroughly enjoyable concert, do not miss Trombones Plus!
